Restaurants raise money for safe drinking water
BOSTON. Paying for tap water in a restaurant may seem like an odd
act for many diners. But knowing that money can save a life makes
much more sense.
Nearly 80 local restaurants yesterday
began participation in the Tap Project, offering customers the
option of paying for tap water, with the proceeds
aiding UNICEF’s mission to provide clean and safe drinking water to
developing areas worldwide.
The effort is part of World Water Week, designed to draw attention
to a crisis that takes the lives of thousands each day, according to
project organizers. Just a one dollar donation can provide a liter
of clean water for a child for 40 days, or enough water for 40
children in one day.
“One dollar in the developing world goes a long way,” said area Tap
Project volunteer Saran Kaba Jones. “If millions live on less than
one dollar a day, you can imagine what one dollar can do to provide
clean water.”
The Tap Project began last year only in New York City, where roughly
300 area restaurants raised $100,000. Over 2,000 restaurants in 16
cities have signed up nationwide
this year and Jones said more than $1 million should be raised.
That’s 40 million liters of clean, safe water.
“It really does go a long way and it doesn’t take a lot,” Jones
said. “You just go, eat in a restaurant and give a dollar.”
The event ends Saturday, which will be marked as the 16th annual
World Water Day.Download a
