Product Description and Efficacy
The second, more sustainable method of water
purification system we are introducing is based on a solar-powered nano-porous
membrane.
The membrane (known as Skyhydrant™)
is a simple potable water filtration system
intended for sustainable low cost
purification. It can be used for developing communities without
access to medium term water supply and
purification as well selected disaster
relief applications.
Manufactured by engineering
giant Siemens and distributed by the
SkyJuice
Foundation (Sydney,
Australia),
it can produce a guaranteed

of 10,000 liters of drinking water
per day, with an expected 15,000 - 20,000 liters of drinking water per
day.
The porosity of the membrane allows for the
removal bacteria, viruses, turbidity and other contaminants.
The technology is based on a
self-contained membrane filtration system that operates under minimal head
conditions without the need for power and/or conditioning chemicals. It is
intended to be used on poor quality feed waters such as surface water or
ground water where conventional purification technologies may be unable to
produce acceptable treated potable water.
Over
350 SkyHydrant units
are now distributed with major NGOs, INGOs, government agencies and
authorities throughout Sri Lanka, Indonesia, East Timor, Nepal, Pakistan,
Thailand, Oman, Kenya, South and Central America and India. The water
purification units are installed in schools, hospitals, clinics,
internally displaced persons camps and villages. Thousands of people now
have access to continuous, safe drinking water.
Sustainability
and Maintenance
The membrane has a lifetime of about seven
years and is geared towards fulfilling the water needs of small
communities and villages.
The system is robust, cleanable and long lasting.
All operating and membrane cleaning functions are extremely simple and
manual. The SkyHydrant™ uses no consumables, and the filtration
process has no moving parts. The SkyHydrant™ produces no harmful toxic
sludges, by-products or direct greenhouse gases.
The compact flexible design of the SkyHydrant™ unit
allows it to be operated in a range of configurations. It is economical;
compact, easy to transport and quick to deploy in the field. It is
lightweight (17kgs) and easily redeployed from one site to another.
Details of the unit design, including ancillary equipment requirements
supplied by the end user, are detailed in the
technical specification sheet.
